It's Spring: Time for Book Group!

We'll begin with a recent work of fiction: Yaa Gyasi's 2016 novel, Homegoing

What's it about? From the publisher's summary:

Ghana, eighteenth century: two half-sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. . .  Homegoing follows the paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations, from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. Yaa Gyasi's extraordinary novel illuminates slavery's troubled legacy both for those who were taken, and those who stayed--and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation.

The book made the Best Books of 2016 list for the New York Times, NPR, Time, Mother Jones, Elle, Esquire and many others. It received the PEN/Hemingway and National Book Critics Circle awards for best first novel. You can read more about it at Goodreads.

Yaa Gyasi was born in Ghana and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. She earned her BA at Stanford, and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Multiple copies of the 300-page novel are available in the library. We are scheduled to meet at
